Breakaway For Books

The Prince George Cougars are coming to a classroom near you, thanks to the FortisBC Breakaway for Books reading program. The program, which launched at St. Mary’s School and Ron Brent Elementary on Monday, October 17, sees Cougars players visit elementary classes throughout Prince George to discuss the importance of reading, setting goals and conserving energy.

The sessions are led by players and will include a reading segment, as well as activities to teach students how small actions can make a difference in the amount of energy they use, and their impact on the environment. The players are scheduled to participate in training with FortisBC so that they can confidently educate students how to conserve energy.

“Cougars players are positive role models in the community and they value the opportunity for face-to-face interaction their young fans,” said Cougars Vice President, Brandi Brodsky. “We are very excited by the additional elements our partnership with FortisBC brings to the Breakaway for Books program and thank them for their support.”

“Whether creating jobs through our new Prince George customer service centre or sponsoring the ‘Breakaway for Books’ program, FortisBC is committed to supporting the continued success of the communities where we live and work,” said Sarah Smith, manager, energy efficiency and conservation, FortisBC. “Through our collaboration with the Prince George Cougars, we look forward to helping students become energy conservation and reading champions.”

At the completion of each session, the students will be asked to complete an “Energy Audit Pledge” and commit to change one of their behaviours around energy use. Each child who signs the pledge will receive a ticket to an upcoming Cougars game.

FortisBC Breakaway for Books is open to any elementary school in Prince George. Teachers are encouraged to contact Amy at the Cougars office at 250-561-0783 to schedule a session in their classroom.
