WHL Player of the Year Finalists Announced


The Prince George Cougars are pleased to announce that Dan Hamhuis is the Western Conference Player of the Year Finalist. During the 2001-2002 regular season, Hamhuis recorded 10 goals and 50 assists for 60 points in 59 games, including 5 power-play goals, and a game winning goals. Hamhuis averaged 1.02 points per game and had a plus 10 rating.

This year, Hamhuis was a member of the silver medal winning Canadian National Junior Team and was the assistant captain of the WHL Western Conference All-Star Team during the Hershey Cup in Rimouski, Quebec. He was also unanimously named a 2001-02 Western Conference First Team All-Star. Hamhuis was drafted in the first round, 12th overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Hamhuis is also a finalist for the Defenceman of the Year Award.

Nathan Barrett from the Lethbridge Hurricanes is the Eastern Conference Finalist for Player of the Year. Barrett captured the Bob Clarke Trophy as the WHL’s top scorer.

The awards will be handed out at the WHL 2002 Awards Luncheon, which will be held in Calgary, at the Pengrowth Saddledome, on Thursday, May 2nd, 2002.
