Player Awards AnnouncedNews 2001-02Mar 19 2002Player Awards AnnouncedThe Prince George Cougars would like to announce the Player Awards for the 2001/2002 season. The Most Valuable Player and Defenceman of the Year awards go to Dan Hamhuis. Dan finished the 2001/2002 regular season with 60 points (10 goals, 50 assists) and 135 penalty minutes in 59 games. During the season, Hamhuis was a member of the silver medal winning Canadian National Junior Team and made an appearance on the WHL West Division All-Star Team in Rimouski, Quebec. Off the ice, Dan has participated in many player appearances including the Cougars New Year Skate and the Cougar Brunch. He is a leader on and off the ice. The Rookie of the Year award will be shared by two Cougar players this year. It will be shared by Tyler Redenbach and Bryn Brucks. Redenbach, a 17 year old, contributed offensively on the power play by taking regular shifts. He finished the year with 21 points (3 goals, 18 assists) and 30 penalty minutes in 65 games. Brucks developed himself into one of the bonafide tougher players as a 16 year old. He finished the year with 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist) and 120 penalty minutes in 44 games played. The Sportmanship award goes to Jonathan Filewich. Filewich, a 17 year old, had 13 goals and 19 assists for a total of 32 points, and 23 penalty minutes in 66 games played. The Scholastic Player will be announced at a later date.
The Cougars start the playoffs this weekend in Kootenay, and the home games will be Tuesday, March 26, Wednesday, March 27, and Friday, March 29 (if necessary). Tickets are now on sale at all Towne Ticket Center locations.
