Fuhr Inks Deal With Cougars

The Prince George Cougars Hockey Club is pleased to announce that they have signed Grant Fuhr to a 2-year contract to be their Goaltending Coach. Grant will be making frequent visits to Prince George, as well as occasionally join the team on the road. He will also be working with the goaltending prospects in the Cougars organization.

“We are very pleased to have a working relationship with Grant,” says Cougars General Manager Daryl Lubiniecki. “Grant will not only provide our goaltenders with quality coaching, but also be a great asset to have around our team. Grant’s goaltending career speaks volumes through his many successes and accomplishments. We are proud to have him put that towards our team.”

Grant made two trips to Prince George last season as a guest coach for the goalies. This expands that role. “I’m excited, it will be fun. I’m hoping to be with the team once a month, at least,” Fuhr says. “It will be good to be back with Fordy (Cougars goalie Todd Ford), Mike Wall, and the prospects the Cougars are developing. I am there to help the Cougars out any way I can. That might also mean working with the forwards teaching them how to take goalies apart. I’m happy to be working in any capacity with this team.”

He says the game is more mental than physical, at the WHL level. The players have proven they have skills, now it is a matter of unlocking maximum potential. “I watch for technique, and also how their mindset is. Technique you can fix, but minds have to be put right first. You can’t play if you don’t believe you can play. I would say 80 per cent of goaltending is confidence, once you reach this level. It takes a goalie to understand a goalie, so I hope I can help these guys.”
