The Prince George Cougars connected with over 860 children this season as part of the Scotiabank Breakaway for Books reading program. In total, the players spent more than 70 hours in 31 classrooms.
The partnership between the Prince George Cougars and Scotiabank, new for the 2008/2008 season, stressed the importance of literacy and sportsmanship using Cougars players as role models. Each classroom the Cougars visited received a Brady Brady book for their library, along with a bookmark for each student.
“It’s important to give back to the community that we play in,” said Cougar Tyler Halliday. “It obviously feels good to go into the schools and see all the kids who just love us. I’m looking forward to doing it again next season.”
“We cannot say enough about Scotiabank’s generous support on this project,” said Cougars Vice President, Brandi Brodsky. “Through Breakaway for Books our players were able to visit with hundreds of local elementary students to have meaningful conversations about what it means to be a team player and why reading is important.”
Each month, several winners per class, based on meeting reading goals set by their classroom teachers, were rewarded with Cougar tickets.
The Scotiabank Breakaway for Books program in now finished for the 2008/2009 season but will resume in October 2009. For more information about future classroom visits please contact Amy Erickson at 250-561-0783 or via email at amye@pgcougars.com.
