Hamhuis Invited To Canadian Olympic Orientation Camp by Andy Neal
On the heels of former Cougar Dustin Byfuglien being named to USA Hockey’s Olympic Orientation Camp roster, Canada’s orientation camp roster includes the name of another former Prince George Cougar defenceman.
Dan Hamhuis, a rearguard for the Nashville Predators, is one of 46 NHL players named to the camp, which will run August 24-27 at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary. Hamhuis played four seasons for the Cougars between 1998 and 2002 and was captain of the Cougars in his final season in Prince George. Hamhuis collected 34 goals and 122 assists as a Cat and was twice named to Canada’s World Junior hockey squads in 2001 (bronze) and 2002 (silver). The product of Smithers, BC was drafted by the Predators in the first round, 12th overall, in the 2001 NHL entry draft. This past season, Hamhuis posted three goals and 26 points while playing in all 82 games for the Predators.
After turning pro, Hamhuis has continued to be a solid contributor for Canada at international competitions, playing in the last four IIHF World Championships. Hamhuis has five goals and nine assists in 36 World Championship games, helping Canada to gold in 2007 and back-to-back silver medals in 2008 and ’09.
Canada’s list of players to the 2010 Olympic orientation camp includes 40 players with senior international experience, either at the Olympics, IIHF World Championship or World Cup of Hockey/Canada Cup, while 36 of the 46 players played for either the National Junior Team or National Men’s Under-18 Team.
