Canada Suffers 5-2 Loss in U-18 IIHF Semi's by PG Cougars

Canada Suffers 5-2 Loss in U-18 IIHF Semi's Canada lost 5-2 to Russia in a semifinal at the men’s world under-18 hockey championship Friday.

Canada, which came into the tournament as the defending champion, will play for a bronze medal Saturday against the Czech Republic, a 3-2 to loser to the U.S. in the other semifinal.

The Americans and the Russians will square off for gold Saturday.
The Canadian team fell behind early against Russia, trailing 3-1 and 4-1 at period breaks.

Evgeni Malkin and Roman Voloshenko paced Russia with a goal and an assist a piece.

Sergei Shirokov, Anton Belov and Dimitri Shitikov also scored for Russia.
Both Canadian goals came on the power play as Captain John Lammers of Langley, B.C., briefly tied the game in the first period and Adam Berti of Oshawa, Ont., netted the team’s second goal in the third.

Devan Dubnyk of Calgary suffered the loss in net for Canada while Russian goaltender Anton Khudobin picked up the victory.

Similiar to the senior men’s team selected for the world championships, the Canadian under-18 team is primarily composed of players whose clubs did not reach the post-season or lost in the first round of playoffs.

HockeyCanada has sent an under-18 side to an annual international summer tournament in Europe since 1997, but this marks only the third time a team has been entered in the under-18 world championship.
