Tyrell Signed to Amateur Tryout Contract by PG Cougars

Tyrell Signed to Amateur Tryout Contract Now that the season is over for the Prince George Cougars, the ECHL and the AHL have offered several players alternate ice to skate on. The Norfolk Admirals have signed the Cougars leading scorer and MVP, Dana Tyrell, to an Amateur Tryout Contract. The AHL team is an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightening who selected Tyrell as a second round draft pick in 2007. At eighteen, Tyrell is the youngest player in the history of the team to join the Admirals roster. “Dana Tyrell is getting a taste of pro hockey before returning to our team next season, when he can use this experience to help lead our younger players,” said Cougars General Manager, Dallas Thompson. To date, Tyrell has played five games with the Admirals earning three assists in his first five pro games.

Over-agers Kalvin Sagert and Greg Gardner have also kept active in other leagues. Gardner, who had intended to visit his parents in Australia after playing a record breaking 338 games with the Cougars, joined the Portland Pirates on a tryout basis instead. Gardner cancelled his plane ticket to Australia opting to travel to Maine, where he played his first game on Wednesday, March 26th.

Sagert has found a new home with the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings. The Salmon Kings signed the defenseman on March 18th and he joined the team for his first game on Wednesday, March 19th against the Utah Grizzlies.  “We’re very happy for Greg and Kalvin, who have completed their junior eligibility and have now experienced the pro side of the game,” said Thompson.
